What is the Leadership Assessment Conference (LAC)?
The Leadership Assessment Conference is a group interview process that will allow you to gain additional information about the Camp Adventure program and also give the Camp Adventure leaders the opportunity to assess your leadership abilities and ability to be a positive role model. In order to participate, you must attend ONE LAC at the University of Oregon or Oregon State University.
Do I get to choose where I will be going?
Participants will list their desired destinations for greatest interest to lowest interest. Placement coordinators (located at University of Northern Iowa) try to place students within their top five choices.
Do I need to be able to speak another language?
There are no language requirements. We work mostly on U.S. military bases, where the children speak English. We also work in U.S. Embassies running camps that focus on English as a second language.
Do you have to be an Education major to participant?
Students from all areas of study are welcome in the Camp Adventure program.
Do you have to be a student at the California State University, Chico?
Participation is not limited to CSUC. Students from other colleges are welcome! The only requirement is that students must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours at the end of spring semester and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher before training begins in January.
Do I get paid?
Participants will receive a living stipend of $25 a day, which will amount to between $1,500-$1,700 depending on the length of the camp. Your housing and plane ticket will be paid for. You will receive your total stipend at the end of training, prior to departure.
If accepted, when would l leave and return from camp?
Most students depart right after classes end and return before fall semester begins.
Can I take part in this program if I do not have experience with children?
Yes, you can participate in the program if you do not have experience working with children; however, you will need to obtain 40 hours working with children before going out in the field. Camp Adventure will assist you in obtaining the experience you need, but we do advise that you begin your hours before the interview if you are truly interested in the program.
When does training start?
After you have been accepted to the Camp Adventure program, training will begin in the January/February. Training will likely be held on selected weekends. Stay tuned for more information.
What if I am not a U.S. citizen? Can I still participate?
We do interview non-US citizens for our program. However, the process is a bit different in that we are very limited in the places we can send students. You will have to contact Angela Burke at [email protected] to discuss this further. She would be able to give you more information about what steps you would need to take.
Do I have to have a passport to participate?
All participants, even if they are likely staying in the U.S. they are required to get a passport.
